Host of the 2021 WMOC Sprint Final: Székesfehérvár

The map of the Sprint Final is almost done. The race will be organised in the historical downtown of Székesfehérvár, a beautiful historical city in Central Hungary, located close to the Velence Mountains and 10 kilometres from Lake Velence. It was a royal coronation site in medieval times and the former capital of the Kingdom of Hungary. It was founded in the vicinity of the ruins of the Roman city of Gorsium – which can still be visited today – more than 1,000 years ago, and the area has been inhabited since prehistoric times. The city is surrounded by 3 different mountain ranges, an exciting and varied landscape with extraordinary endowments: an abundance of natural waters, natural treasures and rich wildlife. Today, the city of 100,000 inhabitants is plentiful in cultural activities, attractions and gastronomy.

The beautiful baroque downtown of Székesfehérvár is renown internationally. Rich in historical buildings and monuments, plenty of religious edifices adorn the city centre, where pleasant pedestrian streets, sculptures and nostalgic building remnants await visitors. The medieval city structure will provide an exciting and stunning venue for the Sprint Final of the 2021 World Masters Orienteering Championships for competitors and supporters alike.

Thanks to the extraordinary location of the city, wonderful sites for 1-day excursions can be found within a 15-30-minute drive, either on or near the shore of Lake Velence, in the direction of the Velence Mountains, or in the Vértes Mountains. Lake Balaton, the largest lake in Central Europe can be reached in half an hour on the highway or by train. Székesfehérvár is located 60 kilometres from the capital, Budapest, easily accessible on highway, by train or bus.
